That’s how the World Cup, the Champions League and most school and amateur tournaments work. In this guide we show how to choose the number of groups, how many matches you’ll play, who advances to the bracket, and how to avoid a group-stage rematch in the first knockout round.

How does the group stage + knockout format work?

Group stage — participants are split into groups. Each group plays a round robin, and results earn points (e.g. 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss).

Advancement — a fixed number of teams advance from each group, most often the top two.

Knockout stage — the qualifiers play a knockout bracket all the way to the final.

How many groups and matches? Ready-made setups

A group of k teams plays k × (k − 1) / 2 matches: 3 matches in a group of three, 6 in a group of four, 10 in a group of five. It’s easiest to size the groups so that 4, 8 or 16 teams advance — then the bracket needs no byes.

Teams

Groups

Advancing

Group matches

Knockout stage

Total matches

8

2 × 4

top 2 → 4

12

semis + final + 3rd place = 4

16

12

4 × 3

top 2 → 8

12

quarters → final + 3rd = 8

20

12

3 × 4

top 2 + 2 best 3rd → 8

18

8

26

16

4 × 4

top 2 → 8

24

8

32

24

8 × 3

top 2 → 16

24

round of 16 → final + 3rd = 16

40

32

8 × 4

top 2 → 16

48

16

64

Groups of four are the sweet spot: every team plays three matches, and the last matchday usually still decides something. Groups of three shorten the tournament, but one team sits out every round.

Group tiebreakers

Teams level on points are the most common source of disputes, so tiebreakers must be in the rules before the tournament. The usual order is:

points,

head-to-head result (for two teams) or a mini-table of matches between the tied teams,

goal, set or point difference (or ratio),

more goals or points scored.

In Tournament Generator you set points for a win, draw and loss and the order of tiebreakers in the tournament settings, and the group table updates itself after every result.

Seeding the groups and the bracket

For the groups, use snake seeding. With four groups, seeds 1–4 go to groups A, B, C, D in order, seeds 5–8 in reverse order D, C, B, A, and so on. This keeps the groups balanced. If you run a tournament series, TG can seed participants this way automatically, based on the series standings.

For the bracket, teams from the same group should land in opposite halves so they can meet in the final at the earliest. Group A winner plays group B runner-up, group B winner plays group A runner-up, and so on. Tournament Generator applies this rule automatically when moving from the group stage to the knockout stage, whenever the group layout allows it.

Consolation bracket: games for teams that didn’t advance

The downside of this format is that lower-placed teams are done after the group stage. The fix is a consolation bracket: for example, places 1–2 in each group play the main bracket, and places 3–4 play a second bracket for the remaining positions. Everyone plays until the end of the day, and the final standings include every participant.

The group-group format

In the group-group format, a second group stage is played instead of a bracket. For example, the first-stage group winners form a final group and play a round robin for the medals, while the others play placement groups. This variant gives everyone even more matches and works well where a knockout match ending in a draw would be a problem. In TG you can switch a category between group + knockout and group-group at any time.

Group stage + knockout in Tournament Generator

random draw or manual seeding into groups,

automatic table for every group with your points and tiebreakers,

automatic bracket from the qualifiers, keeping same-group teams apart,

optional consolation bracket,

printable groups if you want to collect some results on paper.

See a sample group + knockout tournament

Frequently asked questions

How many teams should be in a group?

Usually four: every team plays three matches and the tournament doesn’t drag on.
