Round Robin Tournament: Schedule, Number of Matches and Standings Step by Step
How many matches will 6, 8 or 10 teams play, how do you build a schedule so nobody plays twice in a row, and what do you do with an odd number of participants? A guide with ready-made tables and a sample schedule.

A round robin tournament is the fairest format there is: every participant plays every other participant, so the result doesn’t depend on a lucky draw. It has one drawback — the number of matches grows fast. In this guide we show how many matches and rounds you’ll play, how to build a round robin schedule, what to do with an odd number of teams, and how to settle the standings.
How many matches in a round robin tournament?
With n participants there are n × (n − 1) / 2 matches. The number of rounds is n − 1 for an even number of participants, or n for an odd number (one team sits out each round).
| Participants | Matches | Rounds | Matches per participant |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 6 | 3 | 3 |
| 5 | 10 | 5 | 4 |
| 6 | 15 | 5 | 5 |
| 8 | 28 | 7 | 7 |
| 10 | 45 | 9 | 9 |
| 12 | 66 | 11 | 11 |
| 16 | 120 | 15 | 15 |
For a one-day event, a round robin usually works for up to 6–8 participants. With more, split them into groups and use the group stage + knockout format, or choose the Swiss system.
How to build the schedule: the circle method
The simplest way to build a round robin schedule is the circle method (Berger tables work the same way). Number 1 stays fixed, and the other numbers rotate one position each round. This way every pair meets exactly once. Example for 6 teams:
| Round | Match 1 | Match 2 | Match 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 – 6 | 2 – 5 | 3 – 4 |
| 2 | 1 – 5 | 6 – 4 | 2 – 3 |
| 3 | 1 – 4 | 5 – 3 | 6 – 2 |
| 4 | 1 – 3 | 4 – 2 | 5 – 6 |
| 5 | 1 – 2 | 3 – 6 | 4 – 5 |
Draw which team gets which number, and the schedule is ready. With three courts, each round is one time slot. With 20-minute matches and 5-minute breaks, a 6-team tournament fits in just over two hours.
Odd number of teams
With an odd number of participants, add a “ghost team” (a bye) to the schedule. Whoever is paired with the bye rests that round. For 5 teams, build the schedule for 6 and replace number 6 with a bye: you get 5 rounds of 2 matches, and each team rests exactly once.
Standings and tiebreakers
A typical scoring system is 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. In sports without draws (volleyball, table tennis, darts) organizers often just count wins or use separate scoring based on the set score. When teams are level on points, the usual tiebreakers are:
- head-to-head result (for two teams) or a mini-table between the tied teams,
- goal, set or point difference (or ratio),
- more goals or points scored.
Tiebreakers must be in the rules before the tournament starts. In Tournament Generator you set both the scoring and the tiebreaker order, and the table recalculates after every result.
Pros and cons of round robin
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| the fairest result — everyone plays everyone | the number of matches grows very fast |
| every participant plays the same number of matches | late rounds can be meaningless once the leader has won |
| a loss doesn’t eliminate you — you can always recover | no final, which usually draws the crowd |
| easy for players and fans to understand | risk of “arranged” results in the last round |
To keep the last round interesting, schedule the top teams’ matches in it and play all last-round matches at the same time.

Frequently asked questions
How many matches in a round robin with 8 teams?
28 matches over 7 rounds. Each team plays 7 games. With home and away — 56 matches over 14 rounds.
How do you calculate the number of round robin matches?
Multiply the number of participants by one less than that number and divide by two: n × (n − 1) / 2. For 10 teams: 10 × 9 / 2 = 45.
What’s the difference between round robin and a league?
A league is a round robin spread over a season, usually with home and away matches and often with promotion and relegation. A round robin tournament is usually played in a single day.
