After every league round, the organizer receives a pile of match reports: phone photos, scans, PDF files. Then comes the least loved part of the job: retyping results and statistics into the system. With ten matches per round, that’s several hours. In this post we explain how AI match report analysis works and how artificial intelligence can do it for you.
How long does retyping match reports take?
One report with full player statistics (points, fouls, assists, shots) means dozens of fields to retype. Every field is a chance for a mistake: a swapped digit in a player number, points credited to the wrong player, a missed foul. And statistics errors usually surface when players compare the standings with their own notes.
How does AI analyze a match report?
- Upload the report: an authorized person (organizer, referee, or team) uploads the report as a PDF or photo.
- Automatic analysis: AI recognizes the data in the document: the final score, player statistics, fouls, assists, shots, and other key information.
- Data entry: the system saves the extracted information to the correct match in the database.
- Review and edit: if anything needs fixing, the data can be corrected or completed by hand.
AI match report analysis vs. plain OCR
Classic optical character recognition (OCR) turns an image into text, but it doesn’t understand what that text means. You get a string of numbers and names that you still have to arrange into a table by hand. Artificial intelligence goes a step further:
- it understands the report layout: it knows which column holds points and which holds fouls, even when the report template differs between leagues,
- it matches data to players: it links a jersey number and name to the right player on the team roster,
- it copes better with imperfect photos: a slightly tilted shot or poor lighting is everyday reality in amateur leagues, though a clean PDF always gives the best result,
- it saves the data straight into the right match, with no copying results from one program to another.
How much time can you save? A league example
Take an amateur basketball league with 12 teams, so 6 games per round. If retyping one report with statistics takes about 20 minutes, each round is 2 hours of work, and a full season of 22 rounds means more than 40 hours of retyping alone. With AI match report analysis, the organizer only reviews the extracted data and approves the game, which usually takes a few minutes per match. The difference adds up to several full working days per season, time you can spend growing the league, finding sponsors, or talking to teams.
Benefits for competition organizers
- Time savings: no more retyping results and statistics by hand.
- Fewer errors: AI reads documents with high precision, and you just check the result.
- Faster reporting: results and statistics are in the system almost right after the match.
- Less work for the organizer: referees and teams can upload reports, and the organizer just approves them.
How to photograph a match report so AI reads it correctly
- photograph the report on a flat surface, straight from above,
- make sure the lighting is good and there are no shadows on the page,
- the whole report must fit in the frame,
- if possible, upload the PDF generated by your scoring software instead of a photo of a printout.
Who can upload match reports?
Reports are uploaded by people the organizer authorizes. Referees do it through the referee assignment panel, and players and teams through the match management panel. Results go to the organizer for approval.

Frequently asked questions
In what format can I upload a match report?
As a PDF file or a photo of the report.
What if AI misreads a value?
Every extracted value can be corrected or completed by hand before the match is approved.
Can a referee upload the report?
Yes, if the organizer assigned them to the match. The referee adds the report in their panel, and the organizer approves the result.
