You can still plan an 8-team tournament on paper. But once you add more categories, several courts, online registration, entry fees, and parents asking every five minutes “when is my son playing?”, paper and spreadsheets stop being enough. That’s when you need tournament software: a tool that runs the draw, builds the schedule, calculates standings, and publishes live results. In this guide we explain what a good tournament generator should do, how to choose one, and what it looks like in practice in Turniej Generator (tg-app.pl).
What is tournament software?
Tournament software (also called a tournament generator or tournament maker) takes over the repetitive, error-prone work from the organizer: creating brackets and groups, building the schedule, recalculating tables and rankings, and keeping participants informed about results. A good tool covers the whole event cycle, from registration through game day to the final summary and statistics.
| Task | Paper / spreadsheet | Tournament software |
|---|---|---|
| Registration | emails, calls, a list in a spreadsheet | online form with capacity limits and payment |
| Draw and seeding | by hand, easy to get wrong | automatic, with top seeds kept apart |
| Schedule | manually tracking breaks and courts | calendar with courts and categories assigned |
| Tables and brackets | formulas, retyping | updated after every result |
| Results for fans | a board in the hall, a photo in the group chat | a live tournament page on their phone |
| Statistics and summary | an evening of counting | ready right after the last match |
Which competition formats should a tournament generator support?
This is the first thing to check. A tool that only does one kind of bracket soon becomes too limiting. Make sure it supports the formats you actually use:
- Single elimination: a classic tournament bracket with byes and seeding.
- Double elimination and the Brazilian system: a second chance after a loss, popular in martial arts and darts.
- Group stage + knockout: groups first, then a bracket, as at the World Cup.
- Round robin: a rotation schedule for small tournaments and leagues.
- Swiss system: several rounds against opponents at a similar level, ideal for chess and large individual events.
- Judge scoring: judges’ scores in kata, gymnastics, or dance.
- Leagues and series: a season with rounds, promotion, and relegation and Grand Prix series with overall standings.
What else should good tournament software have? A checklist
Competition formats are the foundation, but the features around them decide how much time you actually save. Go through this list before you choose:
- Online registration and payments: a sign-up form with categories, capacity limits, and online entry fee payments.
- Multiple categories in one event: age, weight, gender, or skill level, each with its own bracket and a shared schedule.
- Schedule and courts: a calendar that assigns matches to courts, mats, or tables and checks rest time between games.
- Live results: a public tournament page that participants and fans open on their phone, with no app to install.
- Result entry by others: a panel for teams and a panel for referees, so the organizer doesn’t have to be at every match.
- Player statistics: goals, points, assists, cards, MVP, for example football match statistics on a phone or statistics from FIBA scoresheets.
- Streaming and graphics: live streaming a tournament from a phone and an automatic OBS scoreboard overlay.
- A website widget: results, tables, and registration embedded on your club or federation website, in your colors.
- Scalability: the same tool should handle a 6-team school tournament and region-wide competitions.
Tournament software for different sports
Every sport has its own needs, so a universal tournament generator has to be flexible:
- Team sports (football, volleyball, basketball, handball): groups, knockout stage, leagues, player statistics, cards, and suspensions.
- Martial arts (karate, judo, taekwondo): hundreds of athletes, age and grade categories, draws without same-club bouts, several mats at once. See how to run a karate tournament.
- Individual sports (tennis, table tennis, squash, chess): brackets, the Swiss system, and leagues where players arrange their own matches.
- Darts: groups, double elimination, averages and checkout statistics. More in our guide to running a darts tournament.
- 3×3 basketball: fast games on many courts and an electronic 3×3 scoresheet.
Turniej Generator in practice: from 6 teams to 12,000 tournaments
Turniej Generator (tg-app.pl) is tournament and league software from Poland that supports all the formats and features described above. It’s used by clubs, academies, schools, local governments, and sports associations. A few examples from our blog:
- The School Sports Association of Lower Silesia runs school sports competitions for the whole region in Turniej Generator: about 12,000 tournaments in a school year.
- The 11th Kraków International Traditional Karate Cup: 873 athletes from 14 countries in 50 categories.
- The 37th Polish Traditional Karate Championships: 1,095 starts in 73 categories over two days.
The same system works for a small school tournament or an amateur league: the organizer sets up the event in a few minutes, and the app does the math.
How to get started: a tournament in 5 steps
- Create a tournament at tg-app.pl and choose your sport.
- Add categories and a format, for example groups + bracket or round robin.
- Add participants by hand, from a file, or through online registration.
- Run the draw and build the schedule: the app seeds participants and spreads matches across courts.
- Share the link: participants and fans follow live results, and you just enter the scores.
If you run competitions at scale (a league, an event series, or school sports for a district or region), email us at kontakt@tg-app.pl. We’ll help you set up the competition structure and a widget for your website.
Frequently asked questions
Which tournament software should I choose for my first event?
One that supports your competition format, publishes results online, and doesn’t need installing. Ideally it grows with you, from a single tournament to a league or event series.
Does the tournament generator work on a phone?
Turniej Generator runs in the browser on a computer, tablet, or phone. Participants and fans view results without installing anything.
Can one tournament have several categories and different formats?
Yes. Each category can have its own format, for example kids in round robin and seniors in groups with a knockout stage, all on a shared schedule across several courts.
Can tournament software also run a league?
Yes. Turniej Generator has a separate league system with fixtures, standings, promotion and relegation, and player statistics. Read more in our article on league management software.
